The Spirits

The spirits that are added to a Bloody Mary are as varied as the people making (and drinking!) them.

Whether it's vodka, tequila, beer, or a less commonly-used alcohol like gin or sake, the "spirit" of a Bloody Mary is as important and vital to this delicious cocktail as the base mix, the seasonings, and the garnishes are.

At WiscoMary, we are dedicated to promoting local, Wisconsin-made products whenever possible, so of course, we try to visit, use, and promote local distilleries and breweries for Bloodies whenever we can.

When WiscoMary was born, right before the start of the pandemic, we started with visits to Waukesha and Milwaukee area distilleries and breweries. We expanded our reach up to the Apostle Islands and worked our way west and then south, trying to visit as many places as possible before they were temporarily shut down.

Wisconsin boasts a plethora of breweries and distilleries across the entire state to choose from, so our task was - and still is! - daunting. WiscoMary started with local places including Great Lakes Distillery, the first modern distillery in the Milwaukee area, Raised Grain in Waukesha, before we worked our way far north to Timekeeper Distillery in Wausau, and over to Bayfield to Copper Crow Distillery, the first Native American owned distillery in the U.S. The distillery is VERY Wisconsin, as it not only uses local wheat and Lake Superior water, but the byproduct of Wisconsin cheese - whey! That's right - a vodka and a gin made with whey! An amazing and tasty addition to add to your Bloody Mary drinking wish list.
